As the weather warms up and we get ready for beach days, boat rides, and long afternoon walks, we always remember to pack our own SPF. But what about our pups?
A surprisingly common question we get at DinkyDogClub is: Do dogs really need sunscreen? The short answer is yes. Just like humans, dogs are highly susceptible to sunburns and permanent UV damage. While dogs with thick, double coats have some natural protection, white dogs, light-pigmented pups, and hairless breeds (like Maltese, Frenchies, and Chinese Cresteds) are at a significantly higher risk for developing sun-induced skin cancer and melanoma.
If your dog has a pink belly or a thin summer coat, they need a physical barrier between them and the sun.
While there are pet-safe sunscreens on the market, applying them is usually a nightmare. It is a greasy, messy process; dogs inevitably try to lick it off, and you have to constantly reapply it if they go swimming. (Note: Never use human sunscreen on your dog, as ingredients like zinc oxide are toxic to pets!)
That is why we always recommend a physical UV barrier instead.
After testing countless summer accessories, the Gold Paw Series Sun Shield Tee is our absolute favorite solution for safe, comfortable fun in the sun. It eliminates the need for messy lotions while providing superior, full-body protection.
Here is why this is a mandatory piece of summer gear for your pack:
Maximum UV Protection: This lab-tested tee boasts a UPF 50+ rating, blocking a massive 98% of the sun's harmful UV rays.
Active Cooling: Won't a shirt make them hotter? Actually, no! The highly breathable, heat-reflecting fabric actively lowers your dog's surface temperature to keep them cool in the direct sun.
Buttery-Soft Comfort: Made right here in the USA from an ultra-lightweight jersey stretch fabric, it is incredibly comfortable for all-day wear.
Harness Friendly: It is so thin and form-fitting that it easily slides right underneath your dog’s walking harness or life jacket.
Whether you are hitting the hiking trails, lounging by the pool, or just taking a midday neighborhood patrol, a high-quality sun shirt is the easiest way to protect your dog's long-term health.
